Order HereRussia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has blocked Norilsk-based Taimyr Airlinesfrom acquiring a 47.8% share in Arkhangelsk-based Nordavia Airline.
Taimyr, operating under the NordStar brand, is controlled by Norilsk Nickel, one of the main producers of nickel and palladium. Nordavia, a former Aeroflot-affiliated carrier, is ruled by companies related to Norilsk Nickel.
A possible merger has been discussed for several years as the nickel producer wants to optimize its business structure.
FAS said in a statement that the deal could lead to competition restriction, which would give Taimyr a dominant position on several regional routes, including Arkhangelsk-Naryan-Mar and Murmansk-Arkhangelsk.
FAS also pointed out that Norilsk Airport is also a member of Norilsk Nickel. The antitrust authorities also said a further combination of airport and airline business could lead to competition restrictions.
Taimyr’s fleet comprises nine Boeing 737-800s, one 737-300 and five ATR 42-500s. The carrier has also committed to ATR 42-600s, but the aircraft have not yet been delivered. Nordavia’s fleet includes nine 737-500s.
