Order HereVietnamese flag carrier Vietnam Airlines (VA) plans to implement codeshare links with its part-owned low-cost carrier (LCC) Jetstar Pacific, and has introduced new schedules to India as part of its newly announced expansion.
In what it called “the first phase of codeshares,” VA will share schedules with all Jetstar Pacific’s domestic flights on an immediate basis.
This will give it extended local access to destinations such as Da Nang, Haiphong, Hue, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, and Vinh City, and also give effective access to Jetstar Pacific’s 15-strong Airbus A320 regional fleet.
VA’s expansion plans come as a response to aggressive expansion and marketing moves by local competitors including startup LCC VietJet.
VietJet has recently announced impending codeshare agreements with “major airlines” and has offered 50,000 free tickets to passengers traveling selected routes to Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Korea as well as on domestic routes.
VA’s plans to codeshare its international schedules with Jetstar Pacific (which VA part owns with a 70% stake) will be implemented later this year, the carrier said.
The move will be complemented by the opening of a new Ho Chi Minh City-Mumbai direct schedule in November.
The airline has already been in talks with both Indian and Vietnamese authorities, who have given initial approval as part of a move to increase bilateral trade and tourism links between the countries. VA already operates a codeshare with Jet Airways on its Mumbai routes, but the flight is not direct and stops in Bangkok.
Vietnamese Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang said authorities were looking at more direct routes linking India and Vietnam, and did not rule out the possibility of a second Hanoi-New Delhi direct schedule.
